Thirteen players competed in today's Spring Lake tournament, divided into a Junior Section and a Scholastic Section. For the Junior Section, Jacob Johnson won his third event in a row scoring 3.5 out of 4, being held to a draw in the second round by Joshua Posthuma. Prescott Gallagher earned Second Place with three wins for 3/4, and Joshua Posthuma was in Third Place with 2.5/4. Three players broke even with 2 points out of 4: Nathan Peterson, Joshua VanderMeulen and Quinn Hatton. Also competing were Ibs Hamati and Eric Schock who both learned a great deal against more experienced players. In the Scholastic Section, Evan Schock played very well to score 3.5/4 and he took home the First Place trophy. Isaac West won the Second Place medal with 3/4 (2 wins, 2 draws). Ryan Ross earned a win and a draw, Nolan Tjapkes had a win and a bye, and newcomer Andrew Furtaw had two byes. The results were notable regarding the high frequency of Black wins.
Jacob Johnson (center) won the 6-12 section with 3.5 out of a possible 4 points. Joshua Posthuma (left) and Prescott Gallagher (right) were medalists.

Our next event will be a two hour teaching session on Saturday December 11 at Jeffers Elementary School from 9 am to 11 am (no lunch). Participants should bring one of their best games to show the group, and also one of their favorite tactics that they pulled off in a game. Spring Lake students are very enthusiastic about chess, but they need more practice, more experience, and more theoretical knowledge.
