The picture above was taken at the final round when Peter was playing against Apurva Virkud who was the 2009 US Junior Chess Congress 10 & Under Champion and 2009 Michigan Junior K-5 Champion. Her chess style is very dangerous and she often upsets higher rated players. Next to Peter is Kyle Webster, 2008 Michigan Junior K-5 Champion. Next to Kyle is Michael Dang who is also a very talented top junior player in Michigan.  Matthew Zhao who is from Grand Rapids and a student of Eric Fischvogt scored 3/5, placing 2nd in the 8th grade section.

Peter’s brother Michael played up in the K-12 section, earning an excellent fourth place finish for his 3.5 points out of 5.  2009 State Co-Champion Ian Edgerle also scored 3.5/5 in the K-12 section.  Also Isaac Zylstra played in the K-12 section and I think he got 2nd in the 10th grade section.

You can find Peter’s crowd-pleasing Round 4 sacrificial draw against Justin Chen and his Round 5 win against Apurva Virkud here:
