 July 2009 Calvin Challenge

July Calvin College Challenge and Scholastic

Kevin Czuhai whitewashed the field.  Czuhai’s rating plumped to 2236, his highest since the 2006 Michigan Open.

Bethel Earns her "A."  Bethel McGrew upset both Eugene Brumley and local hero Stan Jarosz.  Eugene--who has weathered more than his share of tactical onslaughts from bloodthirsty tacticians Czuhai and Ratko Bojanovic--fell to Bethel's ferocious Grand Prix Sicilian.  Bethel's new 1824 rating brings her her first 'A' rating.  She is now the only girl on the national top 100 list for 16 year olds!

Tim Clark topped the Reserve section.  He has now won both of his 2009 tournaments.  Tim annotates his first round draw against Faron Brewster here
In the position below, Faron found the only move to hold the draw.  Can you?

Mario Arnson and Prince Dhanoa shared first place in the Scholastic.  Leah Ziegler and Noah Spungen tied for third.

Katy Ford has already rated the tournament here.

The facilities at Calvin have been first rate, with separate rooms for the adults' and kids' tournaments, and plenty of room to spread out between games.  The atmosphere is both fun and "collegial."  I watched Czuhai and Mario Arnson dig through Mario’s Round 2 draw against Prince Dhanoa over pizza--a great opportunity for an improving junior!

The next Calvin Challenge and Calvin Scholastic tournaments will be on Saturday August 1st.
