The Chens Win Prizes At The US G/60
Tournament report
by Michael Chen
My brother Peter and I went to the US G/60 Championship in Chicago on August 22, 2009. I played in the A section with 13 other players. My first round game was White against the top seed Thomas Rehle; I had a good attack in a French Tarrasch and won. My second game began as a Nimzo-Indian as Black but after the first few moves I transposed to a Queen Pawn game; my opponent sacrificed a Rook for counterplay but later blundered a Knight. In my third round game, Black played a Sicilian line which I have never faced before, but I had a good position out of the opening; a few moves later he lost the exchange and I won. In the fourth round, I lost as Black in an English system; I might have drawn except I lost a second Pawn and White played well in the endgame. I tied for First Place with 3 out of 4.
Peter played in the B section and also finished with 3 out of 4, tying for Second Place. His first game was a Ruy Lopez Berlin where he won a Pawn out of the opening and later won a BOSC endgame with very good technique. In round 2, he played the Black side of a Giuoco Piano, defended well and was eventually up three Pawns in the endgame. He won his third game after his opponent misplayed an attack out of a Queen's Gambit. He was White in round 4 and faced an irregular line of the Petrov Defense; Black won a Pawn and converted the endgame.
