WMAAA Summer Camp and Tournament

The West Michigan Academy of Arts and Academics hosted a four-day chess camp June 23-26. The camp finished with a quick tournament. Jacob Johnson won the rated section with four wins. Angelo Riolo and Mario Arnson tied for second place. We should also give special thanks to house players Rich McClain and Sara Miller. We've posted the crosstables and more pictures as well.

The event featured many interesting tactics of all difficulties, including the following position:

Top 100 Michigan and Top 40 West Michigan Players

We now have our first top player lists up! Based on the July USCF rating list, we have compiled a list of the top 100 active Michigan players (actually 101 this time). We also have a list of the top 40 active West Michigan players. For those who are wondering how we determine these lists, we describe our geographic criteria on a separate page. A player who has appeared in a rating supplement in the year prior to the current rating supplement will be eligible for these lists.

Kalamazoo June Action and Scholastic

We had a modest turnout at the Kalamazoo June Action and Scholastic, with eleven players (all scholastic!) playing in two sections. Pradeep Madduri won the open section with four points, which was barely enough to edge out second place finisher Anirudh Ghantasala.

Anjan Kotekal wins the scholastic!
Raquel Soyka finishes second
David Ghosh finishes third

In the scholastic section, Anjan Kotekal took first place with three wins and a draw. Raquel Soyka continued her recent hot streak (two first place unrated wins) with a strong second place finish, while David Ghosh finished third.

Schuler Books Hosts May Scholastic Event in Grand Rapids

In May, we found ourselves between sites and competing with the Great Lakes Open in Battle Creek. With that in mind, Katy Ford ran a scholastic event at Schuler Books on 28th Street.

Isaac Zylstra finished first with a perfect score of six wins. Nathan Berman came in second with five wins. As for third place, we had a rather large tie at four points, and so on tiebreaks Freddie Noe took home the third place trophy. Dustin St. Aubin and Madison Emaus also finished with four points. So did Raquel Soyka, who took home the first place unrated trophy.

Intense concentration...

The next Grand Rapids event will be July 12 at the DeVos Communication Center at Calvin College, and we've resolved not to use tiebreaks ever again. We're giving out medals instead, and everybody that ties for a place will receive the appropriate medal!
