On May 16, nineteen players squared-off in the third running of the Friday Knight Quads at The Garden Market Cafe in Ann Arbor. The tournament was ably organized and directed by Jenny Skidmore.
In the top quad, Jason Morris (1992) defeated Will Rhee (1890), Andrew Schilleman (1937), and Rey Santiago (2000) to win $16 and usher his rating back into Expert territory. It was Jason's second USCF-rated tournament after a five year hiatus: a month ago he scored two points in the April edition of Friday Knight Quads to tie for first place with Garden Market Cafe proprietor, Rey Santiago.
The second quad was won by Jenny Skidmore, with 2.5 points. Justin Chen won the third quad with 2.5 points. In the fourth quad, Jeffery Zhang and Jerry Chen drew their first round game and then won the rest to tie for first place. The official crosstable is on the USCF website.
The Garden Market Cafe has become an oasis for chess players since it opened in 2007. Rey's chess club meets Wednesday evenings at 7pm and brings together players of all ages and strengths for blitz, analysis, and conversation. Between games Rey prepares deli sandwiches, sushi, and snacks to order. A small selection of chess books, sets, clocks, and other equipment is also available for purchase.
The next Friday Knight Quads takes place on June 6. The $5 entry fee is a bargain for three rounds of G/30 USCF-rated chess and chance to win $16 first prize in each quad. For information about upcoming Friday Knight Quads at The Garden Market Cafe please consult the MCA calendar:
