3/3/2008I recently played in the Universal Winter Swiss. It was a very good tournament run by Ed Mandell. The first round was about 20 minutes late but every other round started on time. It was my first time back there and I have to say that their new store is a lot better than their old one. The tournament was run very well and the whole All The Kings Men staff helped out. Seth Homa and I were the only people there from the west side. Seth played very well, and had very hard competition finishing up with a nice 3.5/5.Dmitriy Obukhov won the tournament with 5/5. Ariel Levi came in second with 4.5/5 drawing Seth, and Ben Brandt and I tied for third with 4/5 I lost to the solid Ariel Levi. I was barely able to escape Tony West who by far put up the most fight and made a time preassure blunder dropping his queen in the endgame. Games coming soon. 12/17/2007Look at the home page and go under West Michigan Dual 5. For some of my upset wins and very instructive games. 10/19/2007
The Midwest Class Championships was a great tournament. The site was very nice, the rounds all started on time, and there was a good level of competition. There were also other people from Michigan competing. Like Atulya Shetty 2.5/5 in Expert, Prashanta Amarasinghe 2.5/5 in A, Seth Homa 3/5 in the Master, and a few more. I finished with 4.5/5 and tied for first in my section with the person I drew. My best, hardest, and favorite game was in the last round against Ronald Zimet.
Here are two interesting positions from my games:

The BHCC started off slow with about 15 people in the 3-day, but then came back to life as about 50 people signed up for the 2-day. The west siders did very good in the tournament. Andy Catlin had a 3/5, and got the top U2000 prize. Ryan Rokita ended up getting 4/5 and tying for 1st in the U1300. Seth Homa came clear 3rd in the 1900+ with a 3.5/5, and I won my section clear with 4/5, and I owe it to my training kit that I got from Dr. Amarasinghe, and discipline because none of my games went under 3 hours!!!!
